E39 Service Manual
Would any of these make a decent first car?
I want an older BMW for a first car. I like wrenching on cars. Which of these is the most reliable, and least problematic? I've done my research and know what I'm looking for: either an E32 or E38 7 Series or an E34 or E39 5 Series, manual transmission preferred. I probably won't be able to afford an E38 or E39, so which of these would you recommend? I want an E39 540i with a manual the most, but these are more realistically affordable for me.

I think the E34 is one of the best looking Bimmers...
Of the cars you mention, the E34 535i is the best bet. The M30 big six is a great engine, with good torque and hp, and smooth, reliable operation, plus most of the associated systems (e.g. cooling system, etc.) are pretty reliable. The E34 chassis is also pretty well sorted, an old-school BMW from before they started cutting costs to stay competitive with the Japanese brands, and before materials and processes were compromised by recycling concerns. However, Watch for rust, particularly on the door bottoms.
The E34 525i would be my next choice, but you'll want to watch the timing belt on the M20 engine, and the cooling system on the M50 engined cars.
I'd steer clear of the E32 cars: Too many complicated electronics that are expensive and difficult to repair, and I'd also avoid the V8 cars for reliability reasons: Cooling system issues and the Nikasil cylinder linings on the older engines (see this article for more information:
