Is it worth repairing my 1989 Land Rover defender that has a broken gear box?
I have a workshop manual and have taken the engine and gear box out of the car. It will cost about £1500 to get the tools and parts to fix the gearbox including parts gaskits oil seals and a new radiator. I need to get some welding done to fix corrision that has occurred underneath the radiator mounting on one side. The question that I have is; is it worth fixing this car? I can do most of the work myself. But need to get the welding done to a recognised standard. MOT. I would like to keep the car but also don't want to keep paying out for expensive repairs. The car should be good for a few years with the repairs done. But do I scrap it and but a new car that is reliable and under guarentee for 3 years instead?

You sound to me like a knowledgeable person.My advice to you would be to learn how to weld by yourself.Practice on scrap metal until you have mastered the art.It will save you money and maybe make you some too.Practice makes perfect.simple things like clean metal and a little time experminting with a welder on scrap can set you on your way.And once you have done it you will get satisfaction of a good job done.Do not scrap your Land rover sort it up for yourself by yourself.You can obtain information on welding techniques from books on the subject at your local library.Safety has to as always be taken into consideration.I own a 1948series 1 and I will never part with it.I stripped it down to the chassis and welded it up.I do hope you consider this a viable option.
