what coolant can i use for my 1989 bmw 525I?
Besides the expensive BMW coolant can i just use like prestone?
And also looking for the capacity of the cooling system and the mix. Thanks.
If you think that you are not going to keep the car for more than the next 2 years, you can go ahead and use any antifreeze you want. However, if you think you will be driving this car for a few years, saving a few dollars on coolant is not a smart thing to do. A gallon of BMW coolant cost about $15 more than most other kinds. If you change it every 2 years as suggested, you have saved about $8 per year.
The phosphates in regular antifreeze will clog the small coolant passages inside of the casting of the engine. At some point when a passage closes up that part of the engine will no longer be getting coolant and damage will occur at that location. If you are lucky, you will only need to have the head of the engine repaired. If you are unlucky the whole engine will have to be overhauled. We are talking thousand of dollars here.
There are some other coolants that are phosphate free. Go to your local parts stores and see if any of them carry it in your area. It would be best to got to stores that cater to European car owners.
You can go to bimmerforums.com or roadfly.com and go to the E34 forums and ask what is the coolant capacity for an M20 engine which is what you have. Mix the coolant with distilled water in the proportion listed on the coolant label.
