Mercedes User Manual
What type of oil does a 1989 Mercedes-Benz 260E use?
We just bought a 260E and noticed that we needed to replace the oil. Only problem is it does not contain a manual that would list the specs. We're going to buy one, but until then what oil to use?
Being a 1989 model and nearly 20 years old, I would disagree with those calling for a 5-weight oil. Too light for a vintage car. I guess the car is over 100k miles and probably closer to 200k + miles. Unless the engine is rebuilt, the 5W create smoke at startup and under heavy acceleration - and an unsettling feeling that you just bought a lemon. Probably not the case if you study what kind of oil. At this point in time, I would ignore OEM specifications for oil would be a good weight and heavy multi-viscosity oil is recommended. I owned four older Volvos and BMWs and two older have never had a problem running Castrol 20W-50. There is no need to change your oil every 3k miles with the MB OEM filters. Every 5k is fine.
